CITY BREAKS IN AMSTERDAM
AMSTERDAM HOTEL AND
CITY BREAK INFORMATION

A
weekend break in Amsterdam is as a break
in one of the most romantic and beautiful
cities in Europe.
Amsterdam is believed to have been created
when the River Amstel was dammed in the 13th
century and a settlement called
Aemstelledamme grew up around the area. It
has a liberal, diverse style and all the
advantages of a big city: culture, history,
entertainment and good transport but is
relatively small, quiet, and thanks to its
canals, has very little road traffic.
Along with the vast range of cheap
Amsterdam
hotels available, this is why an
Amsterdam
weekend break is so popular to so many
people. Accommodation in Amsterdam is found
between the tree-lined canals, narrow
cobbled streets, gabled 17th Century houses
and several museums displaying Rembrandt and
Van Gogh. The Rijksmuseum has some superb
examples of Dutch masters and |

Delftware porcelain and the famous Anne
Franks House, where the teenage writer hid from the
Nazis during WWII are both worth visiting.
Amsterdam also has museums relating to its famously
less refined cultures, with both the Hemp Museum and
the Sex Museum being popular. When on a weekend
break in Amsterdam why not explore the 165 canals
that divide the city into easily navigable districts
and add to its ambience, with comparisons often made
with Venice. |

 |
In the summer, all of the citys diverse
inhabitants come together in Vondelpark, to
relax in the sun.
Everyone comes out to sit in the many
pavement cafs, cruise on a canal or just
ride their bicycles.

SHOPPING

A weekend break in Amsterdam has much to offer
the shopper including international fashion
labels, books, arts and antiques, tulip
bulbs, chocolates, cumin cheese, blue Delft
china and diamonds.
The main shopping areas are the Leidsestraat
between the Leidseplein and Spui, and the
Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk , leading from
the Munt Tower via the Dam to near the
Central Station. There are large stores near
the Munt Tower ( V&D and Hema ), and at the
Dam ( Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza ).
The Jordaan and the streets around it
contain many small interesting individual
shops. The PC Hooftstraat and district, near
the museums, |
 |
contains many of the more chic shops. There
is an interesting daily clothes and
second-hand market around the City Hall and
Opera and there is a busy cosmopolitan food
and clothes market in the Albert Cuypstraat.
The flower market on the Singel (between the
top of the Leidsestraat and the Munt Tower)
should not to be missed. Amsterdam has 25
markets to choose from. |

NIGHTLIFE

Enjoy
the culture an
Amsterdam weekend has to
offer. In the Leidesplein area is the
Stadsschouwburg (City Theatre), lots of
cafes, restaurants, cinemas, casinos and
live entertainment.
There are more than a thousand restaurants
to choose from in the city and a similar
number of bars and cafes. Amsterdam is one
of Europes top party cities , where you can
spend the evening in one of the many bars
before going on to one of Europes top clubs
or alternatively, walk around the
beautifully lit canals and streets for a
more romantic way to spend the evening. |
The Red Light District is in one of the
oldest, prettiest areas of the city and is
an unmissable experience, it is also home to
some of the best bars and cafes . Music is
very important in Amsterdam, and all tastes
are catered for. Jazz and classical music is
especially popular and in summer they often
hold free open air concerts in the
Vondelpark. |
