Prague Holidays and Hotel Information

Prague

Take a weekend break in Prague a find a stunning city largely undamaged by WWII. Its medieval centre is a maze of cobbled lanes, ancient courtyards, dark passages and churches overlooked by an 1100 year-old castle.

Although under communism for 40 years, breaks to Prague have now become one of Europe's most popular city breaks.

Along with the wide range of Prague hotels to suit all budgets, it mixes traditional pubs and eateries with gourmet restaurants, cocktail bars and cafes. Prague's social life is youthful, and the evening sun shimmers across the city's domes and spires, the noise from Czechs enjoying an after-work drink spills from the open doors of pubs.

Central Prague consists of five historical towns: Hradcany, the castle district, on a hill above the west bank; Malá Strana, the 13th-century 'Little Quarter', between the Vltava River and castle; Staré Mêsto, the gothic 'Old Town' on the Vltava's east bank; adjacent Josefov, the former Jewish ghetto; and Nové Mêsto or 'New Town,' (new in the 14th century), to the south and east of Staré Mêsto. In these historical districts - linked by the landmark Charles Bridge - are most of the city's attractions.

If you are planning a Prague break be sure to take your walking shoes. The whole city is best appreciated on foot, with help from Prague's public transportation system.

Shopping

Prague

Prague is famous for glass around Wenceslas Square and the Old Town, but on a Prague break you will also find plenty of well-known big name western stores, local brands, souvenir shops and specialist outlets.

Despite the relative shortage of quality clothing the capital is a great place to pick up gifts and souvenirs. Bohemian crystal and porcelain enjoy a worldwide reputation for quality, and many shops offer excellent bargains. Czech products include crystal, hand painted eggs, handicrafts, folk art, puppets and wooden toys.

Prague's main shopping area is around Wenceslas Square and the streets at its northwestern end - Na prikope and Narodni trida – but there are also lots of interesting shops in the maze of streets and alleys around Old Town Square.

There are new shopping centres on namesti Republiky, and in Smichov and Vinohrady. The city has a number of open-air markets where you can buy not only fresh produce but also souvenirs, clothing and antiques. The biggest one in the city centre is the daily produce and souvenir market, Havelska, south of Old Town Square.

Nightlife

Prague

There are lots of bars and clubs to enjoy on a Prague weekend that make for a very exciting nightlife scene.

The city is world famous for its Black Light Theatres, Mimes and Magic Lantern shows. Most of these shows are based on music and have little or no spoken word and so there is no language problem.

Prague Beer is also a famous and not just for the choice of excellent beers but also the prices, which are very reasonable compared to other large European cities.

Classical concerts are held all over the city throughout the year. Performances and recitals are held regularly at many of the city's palaces and churches, including the Garden on the Ramparts below Prague Castle and the Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle.

The city has some great jazz clubs, featuring everything from swing to blues and modern jazz, and for lovers of a more modern music scene, some of the larger local clubs include: the Roxy Club, which often has some of the biggest European and International DJ’s playing and sometimes have major act dance bands playing as well. Karloyy Lazne Club is a huge club situated in the Old Town close to Charles Bridge.

Finally the Duplex Club located in the centre of Wencelas Square, is at the very top of a tall building and there are stunning views of Prague.
