CITY BREAKS IN ROME
ROME HOTEL AND
CITY BREAK INFORMATION

Take a
Rome holiday
and enjoy this busy, historic and beautiful
city thats over 2,700 years old. The citys
ancient monuments and galleries are looking
more magnificent than ever after recent
restoration: streets and square have been
repaved, historic buildings illuminated at
night and fountains cleaned.
Despite being a busy labyrinth of ancient
and new streets, youll find on a
Rome break
the city is actually easy to get around. The
River Tiber divides Rome from north to
south, with most historical attractions on
the east bank. Via del Corso is next to the
elaborate, square-filled old town with
piazza Venezia at its southern end. The
Capitoline and Palatine hills rise above it,
while the Villa Borghese dominates the
streets northern end. The Vatican sits on
the west bank, as does the busy Trastevere.
As well as the wide range of

Rome art galleries, with world-famous
paintings and sculptures by artists such as Raphael,
Bottecelli, Pinturicchio and Belini, to name but a
few.
No
Rome break would be
complete without a visit to the Vatican. The Vatican
City, home to the Pope, has many spectacular
buildings and churches to visit. It is actually the
world's smallest independent sovereign state and its
most popular tourist attraction is the Sistine
Chapel, with a vast ceiling that was painted by
Michelangelo in 1508. This ceiling, with scenes
depicting the story of creation, took the artist
over three years to complete. |

Other attractions at the Vatican include St.
Peter's Basilica, built over 1,500 years ago
whose immense interior can hold a staggering
60,000 people, the Vatican Library, which
has more than one million books and
manuscripts and the Vatican Garden,
landscaped over 1,000 years ago.

SHOPPING

Rome is
one of the main centres for shopping in
Italy and has numerous shopping districts.
Fashion, antiques, furniture or home
accessories can all be found.
The Via Del Governo Vecchio is full of
secondhand clothes shops, ideal to pick up
some bargains, including jewellery. There
are also many more traditional, chic
boutiques. In May and October, the narrow
streets are lit by torches after dark and
shops stay open late for the antiques fair.
Nearby Via del Monserrato and Via Giulia
have many art galleries and antique shops.
With a large department store, bookstore,
boutiques and shops selling shoes, bags,
classic clothing, leather goods and many
other items.

At the
base of the Spanish Steps are some of Rome's
most exclusive and expensive shopping areas,
Via Condotti and Via Borgognona are full of
elegant boutiques selling high fashion,
where you can buy the latest clothes from
famous names such as Armani and Prada. To
the right of the steps are more shopping
regions, Via Margutta, full of art galleries
and Via del Babuino.
Many other streets cross these areas, lined
with a variety of interesting shops. It is
also full of many designer clothes outlets.
The Via Borgognona is home to a chic and
expensive shopping area. The stores are
beautiful, many with neoclassical facades.
The Via Cola Di Rienzo is a long, straight
avenue, between Piazza del Popolo and the
Vatican, with shops selling clothing,
housewares, gourmet foods, books, shoes and
bags, there are also some street corner
stands.
The Via dei Coronari is in a section of the
Campo Marzio, lined with shops offering a
splendid choice of things to buy, including
vases, urns, chandeliers and a range of
furniture, The street's entrance is at the
north end of the Piazza Navona, just past
the ruins of Domitian's Stadium. Via del
Corso is home to a range of fashion stores
for younger customers and clothes are
reasonably priced. Resembling a shopping
mall, this street attracts crowds of both
Romans and tourists and shops sell jeans,
sporting equipment, clothing and
accessories, antiques and general houseware.
Situated at the top of the Spanish Steps,
Via Sistina leads to Piazza Barberini, with
many small individual shops, this is a good
area as it doesn't usually get very busy or
crowded. |

NIGHTLIFE

Entertainment to enjoy when on your
Rome holiday
consists of late night cafs, music clubs,
and discos. Most places except the big
discos have a clubby vibe. Areas of
after-dark activity are Piazza Navona and
the Pantheon area, Trastevere, and Testaccio.
In 2002 Rome gained a new concert hall,
designed by Renzo Piano, it offers a
high-tech, high-capacity venue for hosting
international orchestras and musicians.
There are plenty of cultural events
throughout the year, and some at outdoor
venues during the warmer months.

|
Rome's
pizzerias also compete with those of Naples
for Italian quality and authenticity, expect
thin, crispy pizzas with sauce and cheese
that are better than anything you've had
elsewhere. Roman restaurants stick to
Italian cooking but with variation.
Sicilian, Tuscan, Puglese, and northern
Italian regional cuisines are all
represented, and, reflecting the
cosmopolitan nature of the city, there is
good quality international food including
everything from Japanese to Ethiopian. |
