Altea is one of the most beautiful towns on the Costa Blanca with its steep, winding, medieval cobbled streets leading up to the blue-domed church and plaza which affords one of the best views in the region. Just 7 miles south of Altea the completely different world of Benidorm where the British go to bronze themselves on the beach by day and party all night.

Beaches

The main tourist beach in Alicante is Playa San Juan which has 4½ miles of sand flanked by the coastal road enabling you to stop anywhere along its length. The beach is located in a residential area that is lively in the summer months and very peaceful during the rest of the year. It's well served by seafront restaurants, bars, cafés and car parks. Services include access for the handicapped, toilets, watchtowers, a Red Cross post, tourist information and water sports on the beach. San Juan consistently wins the European Union's Blue Flag for cleanliness and safety.

Benidorm has two of the biggest, cleanest and most popular beaches in Spain. The two huge sweeping crescents stretch for a total of 4 miles and are known as "Levante" and "Poniente" which is Spanish for sunrise and sunset. With consistently high quality Blue Flag bathing water, lifeguard patrols, a wealth of water sports and beachfront cafes, the beaches of Benidorm can rival the best in the world. For the young - or at least young at heart! - Levante beach is the place to be on those long and not so lazy summer days. You'll often find live entertainment in the bars, especially during high season so check for details in the local English language paper, the Costa Blanca News, and look out for advertising posters around the town.

Benidorm has acquired a reputation as one of the Mediterranean's top nightspots and rightly so. From the moment the sun goes down there's non-stop entertainment in every conceivable form and it keeps going till sun up! There are more discos, cabarets, clubs and pubs packed into one area here than in any other resort in Spain. If you come to Benidorm in high season then brace yourself for one long party.
