Cyprus Holidays and Hotel Information
This former British colony, and the third largest island in the Mediterranean, received its independence in 1960. Cyprus holidays, are very popular due to the year round sunshine. The island combines history, beautiful scenery, gorgeous beaches and a friendly atmosphere which keeps visitors coming back, year after year. Sunny days and pleasant temperatures are almost guaranteed on holidays in Cyprus and extremes of temperature are rare. Cyprus has two main airports in Larnaca and Paphos and the developing road structure enables quick and easy access to the other resorts such as Limassol, Protarus and Ayia Napa.
Many famous names in history are associated with Cyprus, including Alexander the Great and Cleopatra. The mythological Greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, is said to have called Cyprus home and there are reminders across the island, including Aphrodite’s Rock in the south, near to Paphos.
Another natural beauty is the Troodos mountain range which is nearly 2000 metres above sea level, and in winter, topped with snow. The Troodos mountains provided Cyprus with many easily accessable minerals, and much of its wealth before the development of tourism. The coastline combines large bays with cliffs and rocky outcrops, and the beaches are generally a mix of sand and shingle. Among the most popular places to visit whilst on your holidays in Cyprus are the harbour, mosaics and castle in Paphos, the Larnaca salt lakes and flamingos, Kolossi castle and the lace making in Lefkara.

Beaches
When on Cyprus holidays there are many large popular beaches but with a bit of exploration it is easy to find quiet bays and near deserted small beaches.
Coral Bay is a 15 minute drive from the centre of Paphos and is the best natural beach in the area. The beach is sandy and gently shelving, providing a safe environment for children. A gentle breeze often helps the lessen summer heat and there are numerous watersports available including waterskiing, banana boats and pedaloes. There are also good beachside facilities for snacks, meals and drinks all with views of the ocean.
Polis is even quieter than Paphos and has smaller unspoilt beaches and coves to explore. Polis is on the wide Hrysohou Bay that runs along the north-west coast. Pomos is a village close to the foothills of the Paphos mountains with sandy coves, deserted beaches and stunning scenery. Pissouri is also close to Paphos and has a lovely restaurant fronted beach enclosed by high cliffs with watersports also available. Ayia Napa’s beaches are nice although crowded in summer and Protaras is similar in style to Ayia Napa, although with more space.
Shopping
Cyprus boasts a pleasing range of shopping, encompassing both traditional markets as well as more modern shopping centers – including their very own Woolworths!
Not to be missed is the islands famous handmade lace, from Lefkara in the Trodos Mountains. If you fancy a quick tipple, the local beer – Keo – is well worth a glass or two! If you are after some holiday souvenirs, the area around the harbor at Kato Paphos has been recommended by many for gifts to take back home.
Self catering holidays are amply catered for, with a good range of supermarkets across the island.
Nightlife
Holidays in Cyprus offer nightlife with something for everyone. There are plenty of busy bars and discos in the main areas. Many of the restaurants also have open air dining and live music and dancing.
Limassol, the islands second largest city, has numerous attractions including authentic Greek tavernas and music clubs. The seafront tourist area has plenty of bars, pubs and nightclubs with music ranging from R’n’B to dance. Nicosia is worth a visit if only for the Zoo nightclub which has a top floor restaurant with bar and club below. The views across Nicosia are impressive.
Paphos is a mixture of lively bars and relaxing restaurants with the harbour area hosting a variety of seafood restaurants. Ayia Napa is known as the clubbing capital of Cyprus, and in summer is visited by many of the large European clubs who set up home on the island for the summer and entertain a host of nationalities looking for something different to Ibiza.
