Santo da Serra is a lovely small village situated on a wooded plateau, known for its eucalyptus and pine scented clear and crisp air, 25 minutes drive north-east of the capital, Funchal. It has for many years been the country resort for the wealthy and there are many fine private villas in the area. Much of the area is dedicated to agriculture, with fresh produce aplenty. The locally made bread is also famous and bought in large quantities by visitors. Adjacent to the village square is a large, landscaped park with a variety of plants, shrubs, trees and animals and birds in a reserved area. The Santo da Serra Golf Course offers 27 holes and breathtaking views of the countryside and sea. The whole area is ideal for walking.
